The Town kancheepuram is situated near to Chennai in Tamilnadu is also popularly known as silk city. In those days it was more customary and traditional to wear silk clothes during ceremonial occasions like wedding and rituals. No wedding is said to be completed in India without wearing Silk saree. Kancheepuram silk Sarees are popularly known as queen of all sarees as it has noted texture, glimmer, permanence and refinement.

According to Hindu Mythology Kanchi Silk weavers are the descendants of sage , Markanda, the master weavers of Gods who is supposed to have woven tissue from lotus fibre. Also cotton fabric is considered to be the favourite fabric of lord Shiva and silk fabric is favourite fabric of Lord Vihnu.

Common Designs which are woven in the kancheepuram silk saree are Sun, Moon, Chariots, Peacocks ,Parrots, swan, Lions, elephants, deer,horse,yazhi, coins, Mangoes, leaves, jasmine budd etc. These sarees with rich woven pallue showing epics of Mahabharata and Ramayana, Bhagavadgita and also display the structure of temple.
